The sorority was incorporated as a national collegiate sorority in 1930. The sorority became a national collegiate sorority on December 30, 1929, when a charter was granted to the Alpha chapter then established at Butler University that year. It was incorporated within Indiana in November 1922 as a sorority for school teachers and held their first national conference in 1925. At its inception, the sorority was created to support Black women pursuing degrees in education. The organization began to form as a club in 1920, by seven African American women in Indianapolis, Indiana. ( ΣΓΡ) is a historically African American sorority, international collegiate, and non-profit community service organization that was founded on November 12, 1922. The efforts of the Gamma Chapter have not gone unnoticed as we have received awards for Chapter of the Year, Advisor of the Year, Physical and Mental Health Program of the Year, the Lois Lawrence Moses Award for Academic Excellence and several others in years past. The women of the Gamma Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania, went on to become Delta Sigma Theta’s First and Fourth National Presidents, respectively. Both Soror Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander and Soror Anna Johnson Julian, the first African-American woman to receive a Ph.D. Not only was Soror Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander the first woman to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, but she was also the first black woman to be admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar. Soror Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander was the first African-American woman in the United States to obtain a Ph.D. Our Charter members were prominent leaders for African-American achievement during a crucial period in our nation’s history. The Gamma Chapter also made history as the first Black Greek organization founded on University of Pennsylvania’s campus. The Glorious Gamma Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, chartered in March 1918 at the University of Pennsylvania, was the third chapter of the Sorority to be established. Our Sorority has an unparalleled legacy of excellence that the women of the Gamma Chapter are wholeheartedly determined to uphold as we commit ourselves to Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service. It was then that twenty-two African-American, collegiate women founded our dynamic sisterhood, which would establish programs dedicated to Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement. Our resplendent organization has maintained an unwavering commitment to public service since its inception on Monday, January 13, 1913.
