I get to Memphis a couple of times a year and each time I either hit up Cozy Corner's or Central BBQ.Here at the roadhouse, we take pride in our steaks. No BBQ place in Joplin will ever come close to either. Same as Cozy, they smoke all their meat, all their BBQ sauces are made in house and all the meat they use is purchased locally, not store bought crap. I challenge them to go to Memphis and eat real BBQ at Cozy Corner's or any other great BBQ place there and then after try making that joke of a claim with a straight face.Ĭentral BBQ in Memphis is another fantastic joint for great BBQ. It has been owned by the same family for 4 generations, so it's been around a long time.Īnyone who wants to come at me trying to claim that Woody's Smokehouse, Big R's or Billy Sims is good BBQ. It's about as good as it gets when it comes to BBQ. Cozy Corner that I mentioned that is in Memphis, they smoke all of their meat, smoke rolling out and all their BBQ sauces are made in house. It doesn't matter which BBQ restaurant you go to in Joplin, the sauce is literally the exact same at all of them. If everyone in Joplin who thinks Billy Sims or Woody's is great went to Cozy Corner's in Memphis, they would quickly realize that Woody's and Billy Sims suck and isn't that great.Įxactly, and with places like Billy Sims and Woody's you can tell the BBQ sauce they use is just store bought crap. It's about as authentic as you can get when it comes to BBQ and nothing in Joplin comes anywhere close to being as good as Cozy Corner's. Kansas City has some good BBQ places, but my favorite is Cozy Corner BBQ in Memphis, TN. It's obvious that so many people in Joplin doesn't venture far from home, so their exposure to great food is limited or non-existent, so they think places like Hacketts, Billy Sims or Woody's is the best there is when in reality, none of them are that good. Woody's Smokehouse is better than Billy Sims, but even then the BBQ there is mediocre at best. People who recommend Woody's Smokehouse or Billy Sim's obviously has never had great, REAL BBQ, because neither of those places are that good. I promise I'm not that picky of an eater, it's really with steak, wings, and barbecue. (they're similar, Chavella's has a couple more ingredients) My favorite burger is a tie between Old Broadway Club and Tropicana. I think my favorite sandwich is the torta Cubana at either Lalo's or Chavella's. There are a lot of great options for both of those around here. I would add sandwiches and burgers to the list. The best wing I've found is Old Broadway Club.īBQ: Over the past few years I've grown to shy away from most barbecue restaurants, but I think Woody's is the only acceptable barbecue I've experienced around here. Wings: Hacketts didn't really impress me, although their buffalo sauce is delicious. I generally opt to just cook my own at home. Like I said, it barely makes sense to me. I know this won't be popular, and it barely makes sense to me, but he best, most consistent steak I've found in this town as far as seasoning and being cooked to the correct temperature, is Longhorn. Steak: I'm a bit of a steak snob, and I've been disappointed by most of the steak places (including Wilders) around. The only Thai restaurant I've eaten in town closed down years ago, so I've got nothing there. ![]()
